It is a rich culture with its own language, religion, art forms, and food. Gullah typically refers to the people in the Carolinas, and Geechee usually refers to Georgia.

The term “Gullah-Geechee” refers to a culture created by enslaved people that lived on the barrier islands or “Sea Islands” spanning from the Carolinas to Florida. The only information alluding to enslaved workers is in the colonial living section, and the interpretation does not explicitly say that people were enslaved on the property. Despite this fact, modern-day Wormsloe has little to no information displayed about the enslaved workers who grew the crops.

It was not until the enslaved people were brought from South Carolina into the originally “slave-free” Savannah that the plantation started to thrive. Although they were ambitious, the Jones family nearly starved to death relying on traditional English practices. On the plantation, Jones grew corn, turnips, potatoes, rice, cotton, oranges, pomegranates, figs, peaches, apricots, and mulberry trees. It is now the oldest standing structure in Savannah, sitting in partial ruins. Jones built a house out of tabby on the property, stable enough to withstand minor attacks from the Spanish potentially coming from St. The site stands near the entrance to Skidaway Island, on the end of modern-day Skidaway Road. The Wormsloe (or Wormslow) Plantation, now known as the Wormsloe State Historic Site, was started by an English colonist named Noble Jones. With this book, Robinson highlights some of her favorite memories and delicious recipes from life on Daufuskie, where the islanders traditionally ate what they grew in the soil, caught in the river, and hunted in the woods. Although technology and development were slow in coming to Daufuskie, the island is now changing rapidly. Sallie Ann Robinson was born and reared on Daufuskie Island, one of the South Carolina Sea Islands well known for their Gullah culture.
